Who: Jay, Hedy, Hayes, Hope, and Connie Goodman of Pueblo, Colorado

Where: The Old Blinking Light Restaurant, Taos, New Mexico

Out and about: When we arrived here for dinner, the OBL, as locals call it, had a fire blazing on the patio, surrounded by chairs draped with Mexican blankets. By the time we left, all the chairs were occupied and the blankets draped over patrons’ knees. With the luminarias atop the adobe walls and many twinkling lights, there was much holiday atmosphere. The OBL also has a Colorado connection; its menu includes “The Sinkburger – Straight from the Sink Restaurant at the University of Colorado.”

Travel tip: Together with Jay’s parents, we rented a house in Taos ski valley over Christmas. When we began making inquiries with rental agencies in mid-November, pickings were already very slim. It was the same story in Crested Butte and Angel Fire. We found a place to stay in Taos only because of a cancellation. We were advised by an agent that booking lodging reservations several months ahead of time for Christmas, New Year’s, and Spring Break weeks is a must.
