Who: Dave Rich and Brock Miller of Englewood, Colorado
Where: Under the water at Little Cayman, Cayman Islands, Caribbean
Out and about: The Cayman Islands is a British Colony in the Caribbean consisting of 3 islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. The islands are well known to scuba divers for its coral reefs and marine life. Scuba divers enjoy mingling with sharks, lobsters, shrimp, octopi, barracudas, and assorted other fishes as well as many varieties of coral. There are many scuba diving boats for day trips as well as “live-aboards” to use for scuba diving adventures throughout the islands.
Travel tip: Hurricane Ivan hit the islands in mid-September and devastated the reefs around Grand Cayman. Little Cayman and Cayman Brac were hardly damaged and the diving around those two islands are still in excellent shape. However the reefs around Grand Cayman will take years to be revived. Most of the hotels are still closed and won’t be open for several more months. As of the last week in October, tourists needed permission from the government to land on the islands and must have accommodations ready and available for them. There are limited restaurants and stores open, but more are reopening weekly, and there is a 10:00 pm curfew for everyone on Grand Cayman.
