Keep family connected at the park

It’s amusement park season, which poses the usual tough family logistics. The iZon walkie-talkies from Global American Technologies can help. These devices are truly hands-free: A small switch on one side allows you to transmit with a flick of the wrist. A central button on the face turns on talk mode. The walkie-talkies precede each transmission with a loud chirp, and the manufacturer says they have a range of about 1 mile in an open area. In a trial run, the devices allowed communication over a long city block without distortion. The batteries lasted for about 20 hours and recharged fully in four hours. Two removable rechargeable batteries and a pair of chargers are included.

While not as sporty as some other walkie- talkies, the iZon, available from ecost.com for $73, is rugged and easy to use.

Cloth protector for CDs, DVDs

Think that data on a CD or DVD will last forever? There’s a new product that will protect your important information. Matt King, co-owner and co-founder of Remember When, a film company based in Denver, invented DiscProtectors. A special cloth fits between the readable side of the disc and a case. When in place, the cloth helps keep the disc from being ruined by so-called off gas clouding and to prevent disc rot.

King came up with the idea after reading an article about the harm of off gas clouding on DVDs.

“If you don’t play your CDs and DVDs at least once a year, they could get clouded and damaged,” said King, who also is an engineer. Remember When has been using King’s invention since 2001, but it was just released for sale to the public. Pricing starts at $2 for a package of 10 DiscProtectors.
