An altercation that began in an east Denver park turned violent and ended with the shooting of a man and a teenage boy Sunday evening, police said.

Police were called about 7:15 p.m. to the parking lot of the Pine Creek apartments in the 600 block of South Dayton Street, where they found the victims, said Detective Virginia Lopez, a police spokeswoman.

A 14-year-old and a man believed to be in his 20s were shot while in a car in the parking lot.

Jessica Martinez, 25, was in her backyard with her two children, ages 3 and 5, and her niece when she heard several gunshots.

“How scary,” said Martinez, who has lived in the apartments for about eight months.

The teenager’s wounds were not life-threatening, but the other victim’s injuries were believed to be more serious, Lopez said. The two were taken to Denver Health Medical Center.

Police were looking for a male suspect. No description of his vehicle was available because of conflicting reports, Lopez said. There may be more than one assailant, she added.

Police said the shooting was an outgrowth of an altercation between the victims and the assailant or assailants at nearby Ben Bezoff Park, near the border with Aurora. The parties involved moved to the parking lot, where the victims were shot.
