Qwest workers voted 91 percent in favor of authorizing a strike against the Denver-based phone company if a new contract with the Communications Workers of America can’t be reached by midnight Aug. 13.

The CWA represents about 25,000 employees of Qwest in 13 of its 14 rural, mostly Western states. In the event of a strike, Qwest would have to run the company with its 15,000 remaining management and nonunion workers.

For a strike to occur, the CWA’s executive board would have to authorize president Morton Bahr to set a strike date, the CWA said. Contract talks with the company continued Friday.
