Crosby on Groza watch list
University of Colorado kicker Mason Crosby is one of 30 kickers on the Lou Groza Award watch list.
Crosby was one of 20 semifinalists for the award last season, when he was 23-of-29 on field goals, including six from 50 yards or longer, one more than the Groza winner, Mike Nugent of Ohio State.
CSU volleyball picked 3rd
Mountain West Conference coaches and selected media have picked the Colorado State volleyball team to finish third this season.
The Rams, ranked No. 22 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in its preseason poll, received three first-place votes and a total of 96 points. BYU received seven first-place votes and 108 points. Utah got the other three first-place votes and 106 points.
Rams senior outside hitter Tess Rogers was chosen co-player of the year, along with BYU middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock, when the conference released its preseason all-conference team Thursday.
CSU announced its women’s basketball schedule, one that features a road game against perennial power Duke on Dec. 22.
CSU opens its schedule Nov. 18-19 at the Seton Hall Basketball Classic. Florida and St. Francis (N.Y.) are the other teams.
The annual game against Colorado will be in Fort Collins this year, Nov. 30. CSU also hosts Northern Colorado on Dec. 18 and visits Denver on Dec. 7.
Niwot loses legion opener
The Colorado champion Niwot State Farm baseball team lost 5-2 to Tucson Post 7 in the opening round of the American Legion Western Regional in Las Vegas. Niwot was led by two hits apiece from Tyler Wilkinson, Joe Roth and Winslow Taylor.
Huffer wins match play
Becca Huffer of Overland G.C. won her second Colorado Women’s Golf Association title of the summer, claiming the match play championship with a 6 and 5 (36 holes) win over Kelly Gillum of Ptarmigan G.C. at Murphy Creek G.C. in Aurora.
The 15-year-old won the junior stroke play championship a few weeks ago.
Lynn Larson of The Pinery defeated Lynn Zmistowski of Willis Case G.C. 1 up to win the senior division.
Defending champion Drew Stoltz of Fort Collins C.C. was one of four players to shoot a 4-under-par 67 to share the first-round lead in the 69th Colorado Golf Association State Amateur Championship at Glenmoor C.C in Cherry Hills Village.
Also shooting 67s were current CGA Public Links champion Zen Brown of Indian Tree G.C.; Ryan Anderson, a University of Colorado player from Greeley C.C.; and Nate Pettitt of Collindale G.C., who plays for Colorado State.
Pro hoops in Aurora
Aurora is one of six cities joining the International Basketball League, a second-year professional league, as expansion franchises. The league will begin play in March.
Student to ride Poconos
Fort Lewis College student Leana Gerrard has been named to the 16-person roster competing at the Professional Mountain Biking Championships in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains on Sunday.
