Two teenagers, accused of setting off illegal fireworks, are facing arson charges after a fire on North Table Mountain last month.

This morning, Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey announced that the boys, both 15, will be charged with two felonies – one for first degree arson and the other for starting a fire during a fire ban. They also face a misdemeanor fourth degree arson charge.

If convicted, they could be sentenced to up to two years in a juvenile corrections facility.

A girl who was with the boys was determined to have been an observer, not a participant. She wasn’t charged.

Both boys are from Jefferson County.

Investigators say the boys used exploding fireworks and “Roman candle” fountains, which are illegal in Colorado.

The fire, on July 22nd, destroyed one barn and burned to within a few yards of nearby homes.

“Colorado is just too dry to allow this type of fire,” said Storey, in a statement announcing the charges. “Anyone who causes a fire that threatens lives and property can expect to be prosecuted.”
