Counties and national forests across Colorado are lifting fire restrictions in time for revelers to enjoy the last few weeks of the summer camping season.
Because of recent rain and more humid conditions, officials with the Pike, San Isabel and White River national forests and Comanche National Grassland lifted some fire restrictions Friday.
Officials in Douglas, Eagle, Jefferson, Mesa, Park, Pitkin and Summit counties also were planning to lift fire restrictions Friday.
“Campers really do like to have a fire,” said Ian Steyn, owner of Castle Rock Campground in Douglas County. “You have to balance it with safety.
Steyn said he regularly patrols his campground and provides fire rings to contain campfires.
While some restrictions have been rescinded, officials are urging people to use caution and common sense when starting and extinguishing campfires, disposing of cigarettes and doing anything that involves fire or sparks.
Also, officials warned that the wildfire danger is not done for the summer. More days of dry conditions and high winds could increase fire danger.
Just three weeks ago, the fireworks-sparked North Table Mountain fire burned 207 acres near Golden and threatened dozens of houses. Two teenage boys will be tried as juveniles on arson charges.
Not all fire restrictions have been lifted, so residents should check with their local counties and forests for updated information.
