Westbound Interstate 70 was scheduled to reopen late Thursday west of Idaho Springs.

After scaling the rock face, blasting, installing several bolts in the mountainside and building a rockfall fence along the shoulder of the highway, the Colorado Department of Transportation planned to open the westbound lanes, although further mitigation efforts will be needed, according to a prepared statement.

While CDOT engineers believe the area is safe for motorists “for the time being,” they have installed monitors to track and give warning of further movement of the mountainside.

Three rock slides just west of Idaho Springs last weekend had kept a 4-mile stretch of westbound I-70 closed all week.
