Who: Amanda Lofthus of Colorado Springs
Where: Featherdale Wildlife Sanctuary in Sydney
Out and about: Amanda and brother Alex Lofthus visited Australia recently. On a wildlife tour, kangaroos, koalas, cassowaries, wombats, crocodiles, Tasmanian devils, wallabies and dingoes offered an exceptional look at Australia’s indigenous species. Feeding kangaroos and rafting the whitewater through the rainforest near Cairns were highlights. The Sydney Opera House, Sydney Aquarium, the 2000 Olympics site and the Great Barrier Reef are must-see attractions. Our guide taught us to throw boomerangs and play the didgeridoo (an aboriginal musical instrument). Hand-painted boomerangs are great souvenirs!
Travel tip: Introductory scuba dives offer even noncertified divers an adventurous, up-close Great Barrier Reef experience. It’s fun to sample some of Australia’s more unique dishes. Stay up as late as possible on your arrival day to adjust to the new time zone.
