Year of the Rooster

Colorado State Fair in Pueblo

Through Sept. 5 coloradostatefair.com

The Queen of the Kitchen has been crowned and the parade is over, but the Colorado State Fair really can’t be considered open until the roosters crow for the blue ribbon in the small-animal building. The covers come off the cages at noon, and 25 or more birds will be judged for both the quality and the content of their crows. “They look at the form and the colored feathers that pop out on their necks when they crow,” says livestock manager Jeanne Robison. “Stance means a lot, as far as how the vocalization comes out.” For her part, Robison runs hot and cold on the cock-a-doodle-doo. “It depends on what time of day it is when they’re crowing,” she says with a laugh.
