Castle Rock – A teenage driver who got into a head-on accident that killed three of his friends and the 77-year-old driver of the other car reached an agreement with prosecutors today that will keep him out of an adult prison.

Todd Stansfield, 17, was initially facing up to 24 years in prison. Instead, he will serve 45 consecutive days at a juvenile facility and another 45 days on weekends, said his father, Todd Stansfield, Sr.

The plea agreement came as relief to Stansfield’s family and other supporters, including the parents of two other teenagers who died in the June 18, 2004 crash.

“We don’t have confidence in the justice system,” Stansfield, Sr. said.

As part of the agreement, Stansfield will be facing two counts of criminally negligent homicide, Stansfield, Sr. said.

The teen was initially charged as an adult with four felony counts of vehicular homicide reckless driving; four felony counts of criminally negligent homicide; and four misdemeanor counts of careless driving resulting in death or injury.

Marvin “Mike” Gilchrist, 77, the driver of the other car, was killed, along with Stansfield’s three high school friends; Michael Budge and Sean Student, both 17, and Tony Majestic, 16.
