Shiner Bock

Some things about Texas are tolerable. Shiner Bock is one of the Lone Star state’s exports Colorado beer drinkers should embrace.

Shiner is the product of the Spoetzl Brewery, founded in Shiner, Texas, in 1909 by German and Czech immigrants.

I came across Shiner Bock in Austin several years ago and was skeptical. Fact is, it’s not half bad, even though it’s a little mild, more of an amber ale than the heartier bock proclaimed on its label. A deep copper color, its has malt aroma more promising than its flavor. Aficionados proclaim it’s better on draught than in the 12-ounce bottle.

Shiner (Motto: “The Cleanest Little Town in Texas”) is between San Antonio and Houston. If you’re in the area, drop in for the Bocktoberfest Music Junket on Oct. 15. Shiner’s beers are distributed nationwide.
