Rock climbers leave chalky tracks. The white magnesium carbonate that keeps their hands grippy and sweat-free tends to stain the more popular holds they use to haul themselves upward. Some climbing hot spots like the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs even ban the use of white chalk. A 2-year-old North Carolina company called Terra Firma has started infusing its chalk with natural pigments that climbers can match to the rock they scale. A 2-ounce bag of chalk runs about $3. The company also is making chalk bag inserts so climbers can quickly switch between gray, orange, red and yellow chalk.
