On any given Sunday (or Saturday or Monday) from now until February’s Super Bowl, chips and dip are elevated to gotta-have status. But which potato chips make the best dippers? Which ones should be cut before the season starts?
A dipworthy chip is sturdy enough to shovel a mouthful of creamy dip without leaving any bits behind. It also needs to be big enough to keep fingers out of the bowl.
Testers’ task was to determine which widely available potato chips are No. 1 dippers.
Lay’s Original Wavy
Ruffles may have ridges, but Wavy Lay’s have bigger ones. Great taste, excellent dipability.
Ruffles Original Potato Chips
Good, as expected, but slightly smaller and more fragile than Wavys. We love them best when they get fried into a mini-scoop shape.
Cape Cod Potato Chips
Love the flavor, hate the size. Too small and misshapen for dipping.
Ruffles fat-free potato chips
OK for a desert-island scrimmage, but not the big game.
Michael Season’s Lightly Salted, Reduced Fat Potato Chips
Good potato flavor but not much snap. Dip gingerly.
Wise All Natural Potato Chips
Fuggedaboutit. These Wise guys broke in half faster than a skinny guy on the defensive line.
Pringles Original
Not an obvious dip choice. Who wants to disturb the tower? Double up or they’ll break.
Lay’s Classic Potato Chips
Excellent flavor but too small and thin for serious dipping. Serve with grilled burgers.
Baked Lay’s Potato Chips
If you’re eating these, you shouldn’t be eating dip. And if you’re eating dip, these chips won’t get it to your mouth. They break under the slightest pressure.
