Denver is a prominent part of “Golf Digest’s Golf Weekends” ($19.95, Fodor’s Travel Publications), a well-organized reference for golfers seeking places to “play and stay” around 15 major U.S. cities. The list also includes Orlando, Boston and Philadelphia, while Palm Springs and San Diego get short shrift by being lumped in with L.A. The only truly odd exclusion, though, is the entire state of Arizona. Not only are courses and resorts discussed but also restaurants in a variety of price ranges, along with basic “getting there” and visitor’s information. In keeping with Fodor’s usual style, the facts have been triple-checked, and the maps look reasonably reliable, although the black-and-white photos don’t do any of the greens justice (in fact, it makes them all look like 1958 shots of the Catskills). The descriptions are detailed enough, though, and the contributors even go out on a limb occasionally, razzing a course for being too gimmicky or badly groomed.
