The Air Force men’s basketball team was dealt a blow this week when 6-foot-8 senior center Nick Welch underwent a second surgery on his left foot to repair a damaged tendon. Academy officials said Welch, the Mountain West Conference co-player of the year as a sophomore, could be sidelined until late December.
No. 3 Stanford sweeps CU in volleyball
Third-ranked and defending national champion Stanford (6-1) had too much talent for a young University of Colorado volleyball team Thursday, sweeping the Buffaloes in Boulder 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-24).
The Buffs (2-1) were led by sophomore outside hitter Amber Sutherland, who contributed 14 kills and hit .323.
Zaremba leads Colorado Senior Open
Mike Zaremba of Pueblo West, the 1995 champion, shot a 4-under-par 68 in the second round to take the lead at the Colorado Senior Open at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. Zaremba’s 7-under 137 total leads Ed Brooks of Fort Worth, Texas, who shot 67 on Thursday, by one stroke.
