Winefest uncorks this weekend

The 14th annual Colorado Mountain Winefest will have a record 40 wineries showcasing their wares at Palisade’s Riverbend Park on Saturday.

This year’s festival also will include 50 artisans offering everything from metal work and photography to premium cheeses and cookies. Chefs will be dueling to demonstrate their skills, grape stompers will be competing and bands will be playing.

Tickets for the festival are $35 at the gate for a day that includes unlimited wine tasting, entertainment, a complimentary wine glass and a six-bottle wine tote. Tickets for nondrinkers are $20. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m.

Check out “Banned Books Week”

The Bemis Public Library will celebrate the 24th year of “Banned Books Week” from Sept. 24 through Oct. 1.

The classic 1966 film version of “Fahrenheit 451” will be shown between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sept. 23, followed by a discussion of the movie. An interview with Ray Bradbury, who wrote the novel “Fahrenheit 451,” also will be shown.

“The Rights of Readers: A Perspective From the Tattered Cover Book Store” will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 28 by Matt Miller, general manager of the Tattered Cover Book Store and board member of the American Booksellers Association. Miller will discuss a court case in which the store fought to protect its customers’ privacy rights and other issues.

Learn about school board hopefuls

Four forums are planned this month and in early October for Jefferson County School Board candidates by Great Education Colorado, Jefferson County Council PTA and the Jefferson County League of Women Voters.

The forums will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the following locations: Monday, Everitt Middle School, 3900 Kipling St., Wheat Ridge; Sept. 27, Leawood Elementary School, 6155 W. Leawood Ave., Littleton; Sept. 28, Evergreen Library, 5000 Colorado 73; and Oct. 4, Weber Elementary School, 8725 W. 81st Place, Arvada.
