Arvada – It is hard to be upset when things go this well.
But Faith Christian quarterback Tyler Funk was so displeased with the Eagles’ 30-7 victory Friday over Kent Denver, a game between Class 2A’s top-ranked teams, he felt sick after The Denver Post Game of the Week between Metropolitan League teams.
“That was one of the worst games we played,” Funk said of his top-ranked and undefeated Eagles (3-0, 3-0).
Faith Christian did not look ill, racking up 284 yards on the ground with Dustin Albright leading the way (18 carries, 123 yards).
Second-ranked Kent Denver (2-1, 2-1), on the other hand, looked a little woozy after the final gun.
“We just couldn’t get a handle on the flow of their offense,” said Kent Denver’s Amal Gumbs, a 6-foot-3, 294-pound lineman. “We found a way to stay in and fight even though we were down.”
Faith Christian started the scoring with a field goal early in the second quarter, but the Sun Devils answered with a wild run.
Sophomore quarterback Will Deevy started to his right on an option play, broke a tackle and tried to spin away from another tackler before letting loose a difficult pitch. The ball flopped to the grass in front of Brendon Henderson, who sprinted 83 yards to score.
But that would be the end of Kent Denver’s heroics.
Faith Christian took the lead for good on the next series with a 7-yard TD run by Funk on fourth-and-7. Tom Payne broke into the end zone on a 9-yard run to cap a 17-point second quarter.
“The O-line is amazing. They should get a lot of the credit for this game,” Funk said.
Funk finished with 65 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles threw the ball just four times but managed to put away one of their biggest league threats.
“We made a lot of mistakes. We fumbled the ball five times (losing two), so we have a lot to work on,” said Albright, who scored on a 5-yard run.
For Kent Denver, Henderson ran for 107 yards on 15 carries and Deevy completed 8-of-24 passes for 118 yards with four interceptions.
