Getting your player ready...

Writing notes isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. …

Finally, Gerard Warren was going to a team that could put some points on the board.

Or so he thought.

The scoreboard claims otherwise. Warren’s new team through two games: 30 points. Warren’s old team, the Browns, through two games: 39 points.

No matter. Warren went out of his way after Sunday’s victory over the Chargers to profess patience in the Broncos’ shaky offense.

“To have the offense clicking on long drives and keeping us off the field, that would be good,” Warren said. “But in this game, anything can happen. It’s an interesting ride. We’re going to get this thing clicking all the way, on both sides of the ball.” …

As impressive as second-rounder Darrent Williams has been, isn’t it time to start fretting over the Broncos’ 2004 No. 2s? In case you didn’t notice, Darius Watts and Tatum Bell combined for one touch against the Chargers. …

Then there’s Deltha O’Neal and Montae Reagor, two other Broncos draft picks. O’Neal had three interceptions Sunday for the Bengals, and Reagor had three sacks for the Colts. …

Talk about a lousy division. If you have a pulse, know your own phone number and have a pretty good idea that your mouthpiece goes in your mouth, you’ve got to be considered the favorite in the NFC North. …

Tice guys finish last: The Vikings have had 24 possessions in their first two games, during which they’ve accounted for 12 turnovers. …

The same Vikings who, according to the keeper of this space, were going to be the NFL’s surprise team. What, you’re not surprised that they’ve had a turnover on half of their drives? …

Early leader in the clubhouse for NFL stat of the year, courtesy of ESPN.com’s Len Pasquarelli: Ben Roethlisberger is averaging 14.8 yards per pass. Not per completion, per attempt. …

While it remains to be seen what will come of this Broncos season, the suspicion here is that Jake Plummer is playing for his job. Another year of no playoff wins and Mike Shanahan, the proud possessor of exactly zero patience, will look at his other options. Among them: Packaging Washington’s No. 1, acquired before the 2004 draft, with the Broncos’ No. 1 in an attempt to land Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart. …

Several of the NFL’s worst teams – Houston, San Francisco, Green Bay and Detroit among them – have used No. 1s on quarterbacks in recent years. Sure, it’s pure speculation, but that could leave the Broncos fighting it out with the Dolphins for the top pick. …

The number, in case you’re wondering, is 103. That’s how many RBIs Garrett Atkins would have, prorated over 162 games. So much for the notion that minor-leaguer Ian Stewart will be the everyday third baseman at Coors Canaveral next season. …

Not that Atkins hasn’t fallen victim to the home/road curse, just like every other Rox hitter through the years. He’s .348 at home, .222 with meal money. …

Let me see if I’ve got this straight. Twins pitcher Kyle Lohse, he of the 9-12 record and 4-plus ERA, trashes the door to Ron Gardenhire’s office after he was pulled from a game? What, was he trying to get into Gardenhire’s closet so he could shine his shoes? …

Dan Daly of the Washington Times, after “Sports Illustrated for Kids” solicited Sergio Garcia, 203rd on the PGA Tour in putting, for tips on how to roll the ball in the hole: “Next month in SI for Kids: Fitness tips from John Daly.” …

You don’t think Joe Glenn could run for governor of Wyoming? The ‘Pokes have covered the point spread eight straight times since the middle of last season. …

And finally, feel free to fire up a stogie for Red Auerbach, 88 years young today.
