Denver International Airport officials plan to restore 600 parking spaces in the airport’s covered garages that were removed from public use following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The attacks led federal air security officials to restrict parking close to U.S. airport terminals to reduce the threat of bombings.

DIA officials say they can realign roadways and parking spaces in the garages in a way that will allow more spaces to be available to travelers, and still have enough distance between cars and the terminal to meet security requirements.

DIA currently has 11,791 garage parking spaces. The 600 additional spaces could be available to travelers by the end of next month, airport spokesman Steve Snyder said.
