Notes: The United States leads the series 3-1-1, winning in 1994, 1996 and 2000 at the Robert Trent Golf Club and losing in 1998 at Royal Melbourne in Australia. … Els is sidelined by a knee injury. … Toms will attempt to play after a heart-related medical scare last week in the first round of the 84 Lumber Classic. The 2001 PGA champion was rushed off the course in an ambulance with a rapid heartbeat and taken to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical condition. Doctors brought the problem in the upper chamber of his heart under control through medication. He will need corrective surgery. … Campbell, the U.S. Open champion, won the World Match Play Championship on Sunday at Wentworth in England, beating Paul McGinley 2 and 1. … Woods is 8-7-0 in three appearances in the event. He’s 0-6-0 in best ball, 5-1-0 in alternate shot and 3-0 in singles. … Mickelson, Love and Singh are the only players to compete in all five Presidents Cups. Love has won a record 14 matches, going 14-6-3. … President Bush is the honorary chairman. … The 2007 matches will be played at Royal Montreal.

Last year: Bart Bryant won his first PGA Tour title, shooting a course-record 60 n the third round en route to a three-stroke victory over Patrick Sheehan. Bryant won the Memorial in early June for his second tour title.

Last week: Jason Gore won the 84 Lumber Classic for his first PGA Tour title, beating Carlos Franco by a stroke. Gore earned an in-season promotion to the PGA Tour with three straight victories on the Nationwide Tour.

Notes: Tommy Armour III broke the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record in 2003, finishing at 26-under 254. He shot 64-62-63-66. … Mike Souchak won the 1955 event at Brackenridge Park at 27-under 257, the third-lowest total in tour history. … The Chrysler Classic of Greensboro is next week, followed by the World Golf Championships American Express Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco.

Notes: Hale Irwin tops the 18-player field. The three-time U.S. Open champion won the First Tee Open at Pebble Beach on Sept. 4 for his first victory since turning 60 in June. He has three victories this year to push his tour-record total to 43. … The full tour will resume play next week in the SAS Championship in Cary, N.C.

Notes: Jason Gore, coming off a victory Sunday in the PGA Tour’s 84 Lumber Classic in Pennsylvania, is returning to the tour for event that he won in 2002. The U.S. Open fan favorite won three straight Nationwide Tour events in July and early August to earn an in-season promotion to the PGA Tour. … The Oregon Classic is next week, followed by the Gila River Golf Classic in Arizona.
