New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington will miss the rest of the season because of a torn right rotator cuff, The Associated Press learned Monday night.
Pennington’s injury was confirmed by a person with knowledge of his condition, but who declined to be identified because the team had not made an official announcement.
“It’s frustrating and demoralizing,” Pennington said.
An MRI showed Pennington tore his rotator cuff in Sunday’s 26-20 overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Pennington was expected to visit noted orthopedist James Andrews today in Alabama.
Backup Jay Fiedler also damaged his shoulder Sunday and will be sidelined, leaving third- stringer Brooks Bollinger to play quarterback against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
When asked if the team would consider signing a free agent, coach Herman Edwards said the Jets would discuss that once they had definite diagnoses on Pennington and Fiedler.
Patriots: Safety Rodney Harrison is expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered in Sunday’s victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Patriots also lost offensive tackle Matt Light to what could be a serious injury. Like Harrison, Light left the field on a cart.
A clock error added 52 seconds to the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game at Heinz Field, the NFL acknowledged.
“The on-field officiating crew, which oversees the official game clock operated in the press box, failed to recognize that the clock was improperly reset,” director of officiating Mike Pereira said.
Titans: The NFL suspended running back Travis Henry for four weeks for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.
Coach Jeff Fisher said the Titans likely will make a roster move because the suspension leaves them with only Chris Brown, rookie Damien Nash, a fifth-round draft pick out of Missouri deactivated for the first three games, and fullback Troy Fleming on the roster.
An option is promoting Jarrett Payton, son of the late Walter Payton, from the practice squad. Another is Eddie George, Tennessee’s all-time leading rusher, who is available after spending last season with the Dallas Cowboys and worked the television broadcasts for the Titans’ preseason games.
Bills: Linebacker Takeo Spikes, who has never missed a game because of injury in his seven-plus NFL seasons, is out for the year with a torn right Achilles tendon.
Jaguars: A former live-in girlfriend of defensive tackle John Henderson told police he kicked in her front door this month and threw her around the apartment when she refused to have sex.
Valerie Denise Jones, 26, said Henderson came to her apartment early Sept. 16 after she didn’t take his calls, according to a police report.
She told police Henderson kicked in the front door, grabbed her shirt and threw her to the couch. When she denied his request for sex, the 6-foot-7, 328-pound Henderson threw her around the apartment, the report said.
There was no warrant for Henderson’s arrest, and the state attorney’s office had not determined whether to file charges, sheriff’s spokesman Rick Wood said. Jones had no visible injuries, but there was evidence the door had been kicked in, the report said.
Jones, a model, said she lived in Henderson’s home for about seven months before breaking off the relationship. She said Henderson rented her an apartment in Jacksonville about four months ago.
Vikings: Safety and special-teams captain Willie Offord will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Compounding the loss of Offord is the status of starting free safety Darren Sharper, who missed Sunday’s victory over the New Orleans Saints with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.
Wide receiver Nate Burleson, who also sat out against the Saints, is getting better, but he probably will miss another game with a sprained ligament in his left knee.
Eagles: Kicker David Akers probably will miss Sunday’s game at Kansas City because of a torn hamstring, while quarterback Donovan McNabb’s status is uncertain.
Coach Andy Reid downplayed a report that said Akers could miss from three to six weeks.
“It’s a little too early to determine that,” Reid said.
McNabb played with a sore chest, strained lower abdomen and a shin contusion.
“We’ll see how he does (today) and how he comes back in Wednesday,” Reid said. “He should be fine for the game.”
Cardinals: Quarterback Kurt Warner will miss Sunday’s game in Mexico City with a right groin strain. The injury promotes Josh McCown to first string Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers in the first regular-season NFL game played on foreign soil.
Bengals: Right tackle Willie Anderson was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans because of a strained back, jeopardizing his streak of 83 consecutive starts.
49ers: Cornerback Ahmed Plummer faces arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip in his left ankle and could be sidelined up to six weeks.
Saints: Strong safety Jay Bellamy was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.
