Who: Bob and Carolyn Pharis of Highlands Ranch

Where: Norris Glacier, Juneau Ice Fields

Out and about: We are standing on the Norris Glacier in the massive Juneau Icefield. We took the helicopter excursion while our Alaskan Cruise ship was docked in Juneau. We soared over wild backcountry and spectacular glaciers; a wonderland accessible only by helicopter. Our flight included four glaciers: Taku, Hole in the Wall, Dead Branch and Norris. The highlight of our journey was landing on the Norris Glacier, where we explored water and ice pools and crevasses. The pilot gave us an Imax experience on the return trip that I’m sure none of us will ever forget; it was breathtaking.

Travel tip: The Alaska Inland Passage Cruise is wonderful. The scenery is beautiful. You must remember that your ship will not be the only ship in port; it is wise to make reservations ahead of time for the excursions you would like to take, as they fill up quickly. Before our departure, we made reservations online through our cruise line, Holland America, therefore guaranteeing the ship would wait for us if the return from our excursion was delayed. The Era Helicopter Flightseeing Tours are well organized and professional. They have 10 helicopters at the Juneau location. Our pilot, Greg, was outstanding; he gave a very knowledgeable narration during the flight and helped with photos when we landed on the glacier.
