Union workers approve Qwest pact

Members of the union representing 25,000 workers of Qwest Communications International Inc. voted in favor of a new, three-year labor contract, the union said Friday.

In August, the Denver-based phone provider and the Communications Workers of America agreed to the pact, which boosts wages 7.5 percent over three years and continues employer-paid health care but changes what employees pay out of pocket.

It also keeps the eight-hour limit on mandatory overtime per week.

Albertsons closing two area stores

Albertsons Inc. will close stores at 15220 E. Sixth Ave. in Aurora and 10081 W. Bowles Ave. in Littleton.

The stores will close Nov. 1, Albertsons’ labor relations and employment law director Nathan Hyde said in a letter faxed to Ernest Duran, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 on Friday.

Hyde cited a competitive market and low sales as reasons. About 200 employees work at the stores, Duran said.

Workers will be able to fill open positions at other stores or “bump” lower-seniority workers if there are not enough open positions available, he said.

Albertsons did not return phone messages Friday evening.
