Cold and allergy medication containing ingredients used to cook methamphetamine would be available only behind pharmacy counters in Colorado under proposed legislation.
Rep. Judith Solano, D-Brighton, who is drafting the bill, says the law would work in conjunction with Colorado’s existing rule that requires retailers to limit sales of cold medication to three packages a person.
Solano called the use and manufacture of the stimulant “a growing epidemic” in Colorado, especially in rural areas. The biggest casualty is children who are growing up in homes where meth is used and made, she said.
Under the proposed bill, customers would be required to show identification, sign out for purchases and be older than 16 or 18 to buy medications such as Sudafed.
Similar legislation was passed in Texas and Oklahoma over the past two years with little resistance, Solano said.
