Seattle-based Nordstrom Inc. will host a contractor preview today to familiarize women- and minority-owned businesses with opportunities associated with construction of its Cherry Creek store.

The upscale department store chain is opening a third Denver- area store in the former Lord & Taylor space in the Cherry Creek mall. The 120,000-square- foot store will open Sept. 22, 2006.

“In a remodel like this we’re primarily focused on the internal aspects of the renovation,” Nordstrom spokeswoman Brooke White said.

The retailer is seeking companies to handle everything from display cases to carpeting and lighting as well as vendors and contractors for construction supplies.

The company has hosted preview meetings for minority and women-owned contractors since 1989 as part of its efforts to reach out to the communities it works in, White said.

She declined to say how much the company will spend on the Cherry Creek project.

In 2004, Nordstrom spent $597.4 million with minority and women-owned businesses, bringing its spending through its supplier diversity program to $5.86 billion since 1989.

The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Inn at Cherry Creek at 233 Clayton St.
