Getting your player ready...

Editor’s note: Broncos rookie cornerback Domonique Foxworth is sharing his thoughts and experiences with readers in a weekly journal throughout the season. Foxworth encourages support of Ambassadors for Literacy. For more about the program go to www. ambassadorsforliteracy.net.

Two significant events occurred in my life this past week. One was Sunday’s victory at Jacksonville. The other happened last Tuesday when I was fortunate enough to meet with the magnanimous people of Ambassadors for Literacy, a nonprofit organization that includes several involved programs geared toward giving Colorado youth a head start on education and financial assistance for college. I plan to be as involved with the AFL as my schedule will allow. As much as the AFL does to better the future of Colorado, they could offer me no help on Sunday.

I received my opportunity to start my first NFL game just six days after fellow rookie cornerback Darrent Williams got his first start. I will remember Sunday as the day I truly became a Bronco.

Although I was drafted in April and signed my contract in July, this is the month I feel I really joined the team. There is a different feeling of belonging that comes over you when you make plays that your teammates and coaches recognize as key to earning a victory. I know that special-teams blocks and tackles can be just as pivotal in deciding a game, but they rarely get you pats on the back and congratulations on the flight home from established Broncos stars.

My contributions to the efforts of the team on Sundays before this helped us win, but it was not the same as my late-game interception or fumble recovery.

No matter what my role is in the future, I take pride in the fact that for at least one game I was a contributor on one of the most imposing defenses in the NFL.
