Yoga terminology
Asana: A yoga posture. A series of asanas help prepare the body for spiritual work. Systems of asanas are collectively called “hatha yoga.”
Pranayama: Called the science of breath, this system of breath control calms the mind in preparation for meditation and contemplation.
Chakra: This Sanskrit word for wheel refers to seven energy centers in the body. They are thought to be the source of life energy, or prana.
Prana: Many meanings for this word include breath, respiration, life, vitality, wind, energy, and strength. Compares to
chi in the Chinese system of medicine.
Upanishad: Ancient Vedic scriptures whose name is derived from the Sanskrit words upa (near), ni (down) and ad (to sit.) Together, they mean
“sitting down near” a spiritual teacher to receive instruction.
