Jeff Ross scored the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon as host Denver Christian knocked off Kent Denver 17-14 in the Class 2A Metropolitan league.
Ross scored on a 1-yard run as Denver Christian improved to 4-2 overall. The Crusaders also moved into a three-way tie for third place in the league at 3-2 with Kent Denver, ranked No. 6 in The Denver Post/9News 2A poll, and Platte Canyon.
Ian Ferrell’s 50-yard interception return for a touchdown and T.J. Slattery’s 25-yard scoring run had enabled the Sun Devils to erase a 10-0 deficit. Matt Velinder’s 27-yard field goal and David Turner’s 1-yard scoring run gave the Crusaders the early lead.
Kent Denver is 4-2 overall.
Legacy 18, Thornton 13
Thornton – The Lightning had an unusual scoring line, but it was enough to down the Trojans in the 5A Front Range League.
Playing at Five Star Stadium, Legacy (5-1, 3-0) remained tied for the league lead with Fort Collins despite its 0-5-7-6 line in the box score.
Touchdowns by Gehrick Dickson and Tony Grippa, a field goal by Alex Moore and a safety by Justin Owens were enough for the Lightning. Thornton is 3-3, 1-2.
Thomas Jefferson 50, Abraham Lincoln 7
The Spartans (3-3, 3-0) surpassed 600 yards rushing in a drubbing of the Lancers (1-5, 0-3) in the Denver Prep. Nigel Nelson had three touchdowns and ran for 214 yards.
Fort Collins 38, Horizon 11
Fort Collins – Matt Yemm threw touchdown passes to four different receivers and ran for one as the Lambkins (5-1, 3-0), ranked No. 8, easily handled the Hawks (3-3, 1-2) in 5A Front Range play at J. Ray French Field. In all, Yemm threw for 176 yards.
Centauri 20, Ignacio 6
La Jara -The Falcons (3-2, 0-1) downed the Bobcats (1-5, 0-1) in the 2A Intermountain, but that was not the most interesting statistic of the day.
Estevan Armenta scored twice for Centauri, but his second touchdown, the last in the game, capped a 99-yard drive that took 23 plays and 11 minutes, 30 seconds. The Falcons also had an 18-play, 94-yard scoring drive.
