Overlooked in all the concern over survivors of Hurricane Katrina is the plight of fishing guides who worked in southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
Residents of low-lying areas, guides who generally worked on a shoestring to begin with, essentially were wiped out. Most lost homes, boats and all the other implements of their trade. At best, they will be deprived of work for months to come.
To help, a group of Colorado professionals will be conducting a “Guides for the Gulf” relief effort Oct. 31. These guides, along with the owners of the Boxwood Gulch and Long Meadow fishing club on the North Fork of the South Platte River near Grant, will donate proceeds from a day of fishing to the nonprofit effort.
It is open to the first 20 anglers who will pay $500 minimum to fish. Call 303-838-2465 or Kirk Deeter at 303-838-8708.
