CU homebuilders have day in sun

A team of students from the University of Colorado at Boulder has won the international Solar Decathlon competition.

Participants in the contest assembled small energy-efficient homes on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

CU earned 854 points in categories that included lighting, aesthetics and ability to keep the house in a comfort zone of temperature and humidity.

Cornell University, in New York, took second place with 826 points, followed by California Polytechnic State University with 809.

Free-standing, 24-hour ER opens

Swedish Medical Center has opened the area’s first free-standing, 24-hour emergency room at 6196 S. Ammons Way, near Southwest Plaza. Hospital officials say the service area, which is home to about 225,000 people, has lacked adequate emergency medical facilities.

The $16 million, 29,000-square-foot facility is fully staffed and has 17 rooms, a full-service lab, ambulance bays and a helipad. Two to three helicopter flights are expected a month.
