Randy Pye was one of the founders when the city of Centennial was born in 2001, and he has served as its first and only mayor. In The Post’s view, he deserves a second four-year term.

Pye faces serious competition from David Frosh, whose energetic campaign has criticized Pye and the city council for zoning five parcels of land near the intersection of East Arapahoe Road and Interstate 25 for sexually oriented businesses.

Frosh argues that the city should have gone all out to block such businesses. But in our view, Pye and the council went as far as U.S. Supreme Court decisions permit. Three restrictions in particular should make Centennial unattractive to strip joints: They will be required to close by 10 p.m., can’t open on Sunday and would be required to meet the same standards of illumination as other retail businesses.

Short hours and bright lights are hardly the formula for these sleazy “gentlemen’s clubs.”

Pye has more to recommend him than his work within the far-flung Centennial city limits. He also serves as chair of the Metro Mayors Caucus and has worked hard on such regional problems as improving transportation and upgrading water resources.

Centennial voters will also choose council members in four wards and elect a city clerk and city treasurer.

We encourage voters to read the candidates’ statements on the city’s web page, www.centennialcolorado.com.
