AFA extends Serratore’s contract

Air Force hockey coach Frank Serratore, whose team will host two-time NCAA defending champion Denver on Friday in the Falcons’ home opener, has signed a five-year contract extension that will take him through the 2009-10 season.

Serratore is in his ninth season with the Falcons. The former Denver coach (1990-94) has a 120-154-18 record at Air Force and is 169-246-27 overall in 13 seasons as a college head coach.

Serratore is 12-4-1 against Army, the only other service academy that fields a varsity hockey team.

UNC golf team ninth at PGA West event

Junior Jon Stecher shot an even-par 72 in the final round of the Prestige At PGA West tournament in Palm Springs, Calif., to finish 10th and lead the University of Northern Colorado men’s golf team to a ninth-place finish. Stecher shot an even-par 216, three shots behind the co-winners, Tim Cha of Cal-Irvine and Danny Zimmerman of Illinois. The Bears’ 26-over-par 890 total was 30 shots behind the winner, UCLA. The University of Colorado finished 10th with an 892.

Colorado senior Edward McGlasson finished at 219, tied for 17th, and Kenny Coakley and Derek Tolan finished at 223 to tie for 32nd.

The University of Denver women’s golf team shot a 39-over par 903 to finish sixth at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Intercollegiate tournament in Las Cruces, N.M., 12 strokes behind the winner, Missouri. Colorado State finished eighth at 909. Colorado was 19th at 940.

Kelly Brotherton finished at 223, good for 13th place, to lead the Rams. Mikaela Backstedt of New Mexico shot a 3-under 213 and claimed medalist honors in a playoff against San Francisco’s Jessica Potter.

The University of Wyoming women’s golf team shot a final-round 305 at the Lady Aztec Invitational in Chula Vista, Calif. It was the lowest team score of the day, and left the Cowgirls eighth out of 13 schools with a 939 total.

The eighth-place finish was the best in four seasons for the Cowgirls.
