It wouldn’t be Border War week for Colorado State and Wyoming without some pregame ruckus. Last year, Hughes Stadium was vandalized, with Wyoming initials burned on the grass with weed killer. In 2003, former CSU quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt suggested Colorado was a bigger rival to CSU than Wyoming, based on attendance.
This time Wyoming coach Joe Glenn got in the tussle when he said on Tuesday’s Mountain West Conference coaches’ teleconference that CSU rubbed Wyoming’s nose in the Rams’ 30-7 victory last year.
“We were embarrassed last year, and they rubbed our noses in it,” Glenn said. “I wasn’t halfway across the field to shake Sonny’s (Lubick) hand when their No. 4 was shaking the Boot in my face.”
No. 4 is David Anderson, and tradition dictates the seniors on the winning team retrieve the Bronze Boot trophy from the ROTC units. Anderson was a junior last season.
Lubick said he found it hard to believe one of his players would do that. Incidentally, the trophy is all shined up in the football office, with a green-and-gold streamer sticking out from the boot.
