Hawaii

Who: Senior Girl Scout Troop #1548 from Thornton. From leftSarah Carns, Analise Hosp, Elly Collins, Ily Reiling, and Brianna Burton, all of Thornton.

Where: In front of the King Kamehameha statue in Kona city, on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Best meal: We loved the Island Breeze luau held under the stars on the historic grounds of great King Kamehameha’s former estate. The luau feast was followed by the Aloha ‘Aina dancers performing traditional Hawaiian and Polynesian dances.

Best deal: The beaches of Hawaii are like nowhere else on earth, and they’re all free. As eating out in Hawaii is so expensive, our best deal was to take sack lunches, eating them at a new beach each day. Our favorite beach was Panulu’u Black Sand Beach.

Best time to go: We found that traveling to Hawaii in the offseason in early September gave us the best airfares and hotel rates, and the weather was perfect.

Don’t leave home without: A warm jacket if you’re going to attend the Stargazing Program at the observatory on Mauna Kea. With the volcano at over 13,000 feet, it was as cold and windy as it is at the top of Longs Peak.
