For a guy exorcising the biggest problem of his career, Jake Plummer doesn’t have a profound explanation for the dramatic drop in mistakes.
“We’re just playing ball,” the Broncos quarterback said. “It’s one of those things. You don’t think about it a whole lot. You try to keep on playing ball.”
Denver has not committed a turnover in its past four games and is the midst of a team-record streak. The Broncos have gone 264 minutes, 31 seconds since committing a turnover. Their most recent turnover was Plummer’s interception in the third quarter against San Diego on Sept. 18. The Broncos have lost only two fumbles this season.
Plummer has been intercepted only three times in six games. Last season, he was intercepted 20 times. In the offseason and in training camp, Plummer worked diligently with the Denver coaching staff on cutting down his mistakes. It’s the fewest amount of interceptions Plummer has thrown after his first six starts of any season in his nine- year NFL career.
No big deal
Broncos running back Ron Dayne will be returning to the Meadowlands for the first time since leaving the Giants in the offseason. Dayne was the Giants’ first-round pick in 2000.
“Really, it’s just another game. I don’t look at it as being special because it’s the Giants,” Dayne said. “The good thing is I get to go see some of my boys, but that’s about it.”
Dayne – the third running back, behind Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell – hasn’t had a carry in the past two games.
Award time
Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun will be named AFC special teams player of the week for his performance Sunday in Denver’s 28-20 victory over New England. Sauerbrun, in his first season with Denver, averaged 52.3 yards on seven punts against the Patriots. He also had three touchbacks on kickoffs.
He leads the NFL with a gross average of 48.1 yards.
Denver coach Mike Shanahan said Sauerbrun, a three-time Pro Bowl player, has come as advertised.
“I think everybody sees how consistent he’s been,” Shanahan said. “He’s been clutch, and he loves situations where he’s backed up and he goes out there with a smile on his face. Most of the guys I’ve been around, when you’re backed up on the minus-5, they’re taking off hiding from me.”
Meanwhile, Plummer and cornerback Domonique Foxworth have been nominated for awards for their play against the Patriots. Plummer is a finalist for the FedEx air honors after throwing for 262 yards and two touchdowns against New England. Foxworth was nominated for rookie of the week. He had 10 tackles and forced a fumble against the Patriots.
Williams update
The Broncos had no comment on the Sept. 23 arrest of linebacker D.J. Williams. Williams, whose given name is Genos Williams, was arrested in Douglas County for driving under the influence of alcohol. His court date is this month.
