Bus drivers suspended after rear-end wreck

Two school bus drivers have been suspended from driving for Durango School District 9-R pending the outcome of an investigation into a collision that sent 34 students to a hospital, district officials said.

The students were sent to Mercy Medical Center as a precaution, and all injuries were minor following the accident Thursday morning, district spokeswoman Deborah Uroda said.

An empty bus being driven by driver Mea Summerhays rear-ended a bus carrying 37 students that was driven by substitute driver David Atnip, Uroda said.

After the accident, both buses left the scene and went on to their destinations: Summerhays to the district’s transportation center and Atnip to Escalante Middle School, where students were examined after they got off the bus and told school officials about the crash.

Most students who complained of injuries said they had head and neck pain and some bruises, Uroda said.

Moore, 59, who had fled Hurricane Rita and was heading to her son’s home in Golden, was last seen Sept. 23 shortly before midnight by Newcastle police officers.

Sheril Moore is white, with red hair and hazel eyes. She is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds.

Second ski area says it’s ready to open

Warm weather prevented Arapahoe Basin ski area from opening Friday as planned, but it will open today because of aggressive snowmaking.

“We’ll have all of our guns going Saturday night to get the ski area open for Sunday (today),” spokeswoman Leigh Hierholzer said.

She said the base is now 18 inches.

Ski and board rentals are open for the season, along with the retail shop, food and beverage areas and the 6th Alley bar.

The ski school will not be open until the Molly Hogan Learning Center opens in November.

Loveland Ski Area, on the other side of Loveland Pass, is the only other ski area open in the state.
