The hole truth: Winchell’s vs. Krispy Kreme
Political viewpoints aren’t the only things people can’t agree on. When it comes to doughnuts, the Culinary Arts students in the Fred N. Thomas Career Education Center Middle College of Denver (dosomethingreal.com) have strong, well-founded opinions. The students, taught by Antje Sliger, recently performed a taste test of glazed raised doughnuts, comparing Krispy Kreme with rival Winchell’s. The students evaluated the doughnuts on such qualities as appearance, aroma, texture, balance of flavors, aftertaste and value. After a lively discussion, the votes were tallied. Fortunately, no recounts were necessary: Winchell’s won by a narrow margin, with 21 of the students preferring the firm’s less-sweet, denser and slightly larger doughnut, and 19 voting for Krispy Kreme’s “melt-in-your-mouth” texture and sweet glaze. Not every would-be critic was polarized by the political process, however: Two students voted “undecided.”
