Bulgaria

Who: Ed Bentzen of Arvada. Where: Plovdiv (Trimontium’s Ancient Theater)

Best meal: A Bulgarian favorite is the Shopska Salad. You can find this on most menus in Bulgaria’s restaurants. It is very similar to a Greek salad; however, there is no lettuce. It is a mix of tomato, cucumbers, peppers and onions, with feta or sheep-

milk cheese.

Best deal: In the town of Plov-

div, the area around the theater is called “Old Town.” The shopping in this area is mostly made up of local arts, crafts and antiques, all at very good prices. Rugs and pottery are available at bargain prices.

Best time to go: The weather is very similar to the weather in Denver, so summer is a very good time to visit and see the local sights. Also many of the sights are outdoors.

Don’t leave home without: Your camera; Plovdiv is an ancient city with strong cultural influences from Eastern and Western civilizations. Plovdiv is older than some of the oldest popular towns such as Rome, Athens and Carthage. Because of this, there are many ancient sites and archaeological monuments that are worthy of photographing.
