Peru
Who: Stephanie Wolfe of Lakewood and Dustin Bennetts of Arvada
Where: Montero. It sits north at an elevation of 4,094 feet in the Andes. It is about a four-hour car ride from the nearest city, Piura. The town is known for its artisans and farming of sugar cane, rice, cocoa beans and corn.
Best meal: There are several restaurants in town that will serve you whatever is on the menu for the day at a very reasonable price of four nuevos soles ($1.20).
Best deal: The local artisans make beautiful weavings that are very inexpensive in Montero, so buy them while you are there. The prices for the same items in the city are much higher.
Best time to go: If you visit during the rainy season, make sure to bring your slickers for the mud!
Don’t leave home without: Earplugs. The dogs, roosters and donkeys are active all night. There is also the town’s loud speaker announcing incoming phone calls on one of the town’s four phone lines. This starts early in the morning.
