Frontier Airlines made money for the first time in more than a year, reporting a $6.9 million profit in the quarter ended Sept. 30. Its profit of 18 cents a share ended a string of six quarterly losses.

In the same period a year ago, Frontier lost $2.1 million, or 6 cents a share.

The airline had $258.4 million in revenue in the third quarter, up from $214.4 million a year earlier.

Chief executive Jeff Potter credited the profit to employees, including on-time performance of flights.

He warned that the company faces a “daunting task” in the fourth quarter due to high fuel costs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and lost revenues due to Hurricane Wilma.

The airline expects the loss in the quarter ending Dec. 31 to be greater in magnitude than the third-quarter profit.
