So how do you explain to a 12-year-old on his first elk adventure that elk hunting won’t always be like this? That’s the dilemma facing Cortez resident Doug Aiken, who took his son, Chris, into the national forest near Dolores on opening day of rifle season Oct. 15. “We climbed a little ridge and watched this park,” said Doug, who began to use a cow call. “Then this big bull walked out.” Chris, a sixth-grader at Cortez Middle School, shot the trophy at 70 yards.
