RTD plans to hold its first public meeting Wednesday night on the transit agency’s proposal to charge for parking at select light-rail and bus stations.
Currently, parking at all RTD lots is free.
Last month, the Regional Transportation District unveiled a comprehensive plan that would offer residents of the eight-county RTD district free daily parking at RTD’s busiest lots but charge nonresidents $4 a day for parking.
The proposal also will allow weekday commuters who live in the transit district to reserve a space at RTD’s busiest park- n-Rides for $20 a month.
The guarantee would be for commuters arriving at lots between 5 and 10 a.m.
RTD is promoting the pay- for-parking scheme in advance of the opening next year of the southeast corridor light rail line to Aurora and Douglas County.
The service is expected to generate strong demand for parking along the corridor.
Under RTD’s plan, residents of the transit district who leave their vehicle at certain park-n- Rides for more than 24 hours will be charged $2 a day for parking. Nonresidents would pay $4 a day for the extended parking under the plan.
These parking rates apply to those who register their license plates with RTD. Nonregistered users of RTD lots would pay $6 a day for parking.
Wednesday’s meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Bemis Public Library, 6014 S. Datura St. in Littleton. Another public meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lone Tree Recreation Center, 10249 Ridgegate Circle.
