Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., issued the following statement today regarding President George W. Bush’s nomination of Samuel Alito, Jr. to be Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court:

“With the selection of Judge Alito, President Bush has nominated a well-qualified judge in the mold of Chief Justice John Roberts. Having spent nearly 15 years with the Department of Justice, and the past 15 years on the bench with the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Alito has had a distinguished career in public service.”

“Twice confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate, Judge Alito has the reputation of being an intelligent, fair-minded jurist who respects the rule of law.”

“I look forward to meeting personally with Judge Alito soon to discuss his nomination, as well as his knowledge of legal issues important to the West, such as water, public lands and environmental law.”

“As with all of the President’s nominees, I expect a fair and dignified confirmation process, ending in a timely up-or-down vote.”
