Hibernation Ale
Note: This Beer of the Week appeared Oct. 26 with an incorrect photo.
The weather has turned and so should your preference in beer, to a heartier, heftier brew.
Enter Great Divide Brewing in Denver. This marks the 10th anniversary of its Hibernation Ale, touted by the brewer as “Colorado’s original strong ale.” It’s roots are British, where it is known as “old ale.”
Aged two months, Hibernation Ale is made with five kinds of malt (including chocolate malt, which gives it a slight roasted flavor) and three kinds of hops. It’s big, big, big, checking in at 8.1 percent alcohol (by volume). A good call for serving with heavier winter food.
Made in limited amounts, Hibernation Ale, which won a silver medal at the 2003 Great American Beer Festival, is available only through Dec. 15 despite the fact Great Divide doubled production this year.
Great Divide’s beers are distributed in 12 states in kegs and 12-ounce bottles.
