Who: Anton (Toni) Lang of Littleton

Where: Avila, Spain

Out and about: The “City of Kings and Saints”, Avila was sacred to an ancient Celtiberian culture long before the arrival of the Romans or Christians. It was captured by the Arab Moors in 714 AD and recaptured by the Christians in
1088. Avila’s encircling walls with their ninety towers were completed in the 12th century. The 13th century central church is where Avila-born Saint Teresa (1515-1582) worshiped. The bustle of Avila’s Mercado (market) contrasts with the quiet repose of the churches, convents and cloisters where the spirit of Santa Teresa, of Jesus and of Saint John of the Cross still vibrate.

Travel tip: Avila was one of seven cities visited on a 12-day singing tour of Spain with Littleton’s St. Frances Cabrini choir. Ancient cobbled streets make comfortable walking shoes a must. In these old towns, driving is adventurous and parking is at a premium (in major cities even worse); public or tour bus transportation is a plus. The Spanish are a friendly people who enjoy a leisurely pace. So slow down, relax and enjoy this culturally rich country.
