Nominations are being accepted for The Denver Post Gold Helmet Award, which is celebrating its 50th year of recognizing outstanding young men in Colorado.

The deadline is Dec. 6.

Since 1951, when Bill Faddis of Regis received the first award, The Post annually has honored the top player, scholar and citizen in schoolboy football in Colorado.

Last year’s winner was Tyler Sale of Arapahoe.

The qualifications that must be met to be considered for the award are:

Nominees must be seniors and have a 3.5 grade-point average or better with a strong academic base.

They must be involved in activities outside of school.

They must be named to The Denver Post’s all-state first team. Because The Post will not announce all-state teams until mid-December, anyone nominating a player may call Neil H. Devlin at The Post’s sports department (303-820-1714) to see if that player is being considered for all-state honors.

The Post will feature the winner Dec. 17 in the annual Fall Best of the Best section, which also will recognize players and coaches from the fall season’s other eight sports. The winner will receive his trophy at halftime of the Broncos’ game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Nominees must be submitted by athletic directors or coaches only, and letters must be typed on school stationery. Background material on nominees must be mailed to Neil H. Devlin, high school sports editor, The Denver Post, 1560 Broadway, Denver, CO 80202, or faxed to 303-866-9004.
