A defendant on the stand during a sex-assault trial in Arapahoe County broke down Thursday under questioning by a prosector and admitted his guilt.

David Stephen Borges, 50, faces a minimum sentence of eight years to life in pri son.

Borges’ flip-flop was an unusual moment, said Deputy District Attorney Ben Leutwyler, the prosecutor.

“He was being confronted with many inconsistencies in his version,” Leutwyler said. “Gradually as he was being confronted, he began to look defeated. I kept asking questions until ultimately he admitted to the conduct.”

Leutwyler grilled Borges for about 50 minutes Thursday. The deputy DA described his line of questioning as “firm” and “deliberate.”

Borges was being tried on six counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and two counts of aggravated incest.

He also faced two counts of pattern sexual assault.

After Leutwyler’s examination, the defense rested and District Judge Timothy Fasing called a recess.

When the trial resumed, Borges entered guilty pleas to all counts.

“I’ve never heard of this happening before,” District Attorney Carol Chambers said. “We had a very skillful attorney handling the case.”

The victims – one is now 20 and the other, 17 – were assaulted starting in 1993 and up until 2004.

One of the girls was 8 when the assaults started. The other was 11.

Borges will be sentenced Feb. 23.

“I’m still sort of shaking my head in disbelief,” Leutwyler said. “Many prosecutors imagine this event, but realistically many of us don’t expect to see it.”
