Driver wounded in road-rage incident
A man driving a car with Colorado “Respect Life” license plates threw a can at another man’s car and then shot the driver in a road-rage incident, police said.
Littleton police were called by Littleton Adventist Hospital at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday on a report of a man being treated for a gunshot wound.
When officers arrived, the victim said he had been shot after a traffic incident at South Santa Fe Drive and West Mississippi Avenue, according to Sgt. Sean Dugan.
The suspect is described as a white man about 30 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and about 190 pounds. He has a muscular build, medium-length brown hair and a possible mustache or goatee. The suspect was driving a tan or gold Toyota Corolla, with “V6” on the trunk lid and “Respect Life” license plates.
At South Santa Fe Drive and South Prince Street, the pair stopped their vehicles and exchanged words. The suspect fired a shotgun at the victim, hitting him once in the upper torso, arm and head, Dugan said.
The victim is in fair condition.
Governor hopeful gathers endorsements
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Ritter on Thursday unveiled a list of endorsements from prominent Democrats, including Denver City Council president Rosemary Rodriguez, former state Sen. Polly Baca, Denver Public Schools board member Theresa Peña, and Michael Carrigan, member of the University of Colorado Board of Regents.
Some Democrats have expressed reluctance to support Ritter, the former Denver district attorney, because of his position on abortion rights.
But Rodriguez said Ritter assured her he does not want to overturn Roe vs. Wade, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.
Brother denies concealing sect leader
The brother of a fugitive polygamist sect leader appeared in federal court Thursday to deny charges he concealed his brother from arrest.
Seth Jeffs, 32, of Hilldale, Utah, is accused of helping his brother, Warren Jeffs, keep from being caught. Warren Jeffs is the “prophet” of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which broke away from mainstream Mormonism in 1890.
Authorities have been searching for Warren Jeffs, accused of sex with a minor, since June. Seth Jeffs was arrested last month after Pueblo authorities pulled him over and found his car filled with money and letters for his brother. His trial is set for Jan. 9.
Prosecution deferred for gambling suspects
Two defendants in an April gambling raid on a Palmer Lake restaurant have agreed to deferred prosecution for a year in exchange for not violating the law during that time and actively participating with the Colorado Department of Gaming to educate bar and restaurant owners about gaming laws and “Texas Hold ‘Em” tournaments, the district attorney’s office announced Thursday.
Jeff Hulsman and Peggy Jardon agreed to the terms to avoid prosecution, according to a prepared statement.
Architect Libeskind sought for park plan
A nonprofit organization has raised money to hire Daniel Libeskind, the architect who designed the addition to the Denver Art Museum, to improve the park at Civic Center.
The money will come from the Civic Center Conservancy, assisted by a major gift from The M.D.C. Holdings Inc. Charitable Foundation.
The hiring will help carry out a master plan developed for the park. That plan, developed by the Denver Parks and Recreation Department, calls for new festival gardens, interactive water features, new pavilions and plazas.
